Poultry Health Management
Poultry Health - Key to Profitable Poultry Production. Poultry with poor health status cannot convert nutrients in feed to eggs and meat efficiently.
Course Summary
Poultry health management is the practice of ensuring that poultry birds are in a state of health that enables them to perform at the optimal level of their genetic potential. The three principles of poultry health management are prevention of disease, early detection of disease and early and complete treatment of disease. Disease prevention programs include biosecurity, vaccination and treatment, adequate and balanced nutrition and flock management. Early detection of disease requires regular performance of monitoring and surveillance, post mortem examination and diagnostic tests. Early treatment should be based upon a confirmatory diagnosis and antimicrobial sensitivity test. Poultry health management according to Simon M. Shane, is a continuous activity by management as shown involves a continuous evaluation of risks, implementation of biosecurity and vaccination and analysis and review of production and financial performance.

Personal Information
I am a veterinarian of over 25 years experience in veterinary services and agricultural program administration. I retired from Federal Capital Territory Administration in 2015 as the Director of Technical Services in Federal Capital Territory Agricultural Program. I am a registered veterinary surgeon with Veterinary Council of Nigeria and a member of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association. I am the managing director of BioSoft Integrated Systems Limited, an agro-allied and veterinary consultancy organization.
Work Experience
Veterinary Officer, Federal Capital Territory Administration January 1990 to 2001
I coordinated and managed veterinary and animal health care programs. These included vaccination campaigns against rinderpest and contagious bovine pleuropneumonia in cattle, PPR in goats and rabies in dogs and cats. I also served as the veterinary clinician in Abuja Veterinary Clinic and Surgery, Nyanya.
Abattoir Manager, Karu Abattoir, Federal Capital Territory Administration 2001 to 2004
I coordinated meat inspection and handling. The high of my service was a letter of commendation from the department for my performance in six (6) months as the manager of the abattoir.
Head of Veterinary Public Health, Federal Capital Territory 2004 to 2007
I coordinated the operations of all the abattoirs, meat processing and handling facilities in Abuja. This included hotels, cold storage facilities and meat markets. I also coordinated programs for control of rabies and avian influenza.
Director Technical Services, Federal Capital Agricultural Program 2007 to 2015
I coordinated several rural agricultural development programs including Roots and Tuber Expansion program of FCT and Component IV of FCT Fadama III program. I conducted monthly technology review meetings to assess adoption of new agricultural technologies and innovations by rural farmers. I was also a member of the North Central Technical Committee of REFILS (Research-Extension-Farmers-Input-Linkage System).
Executive Director (Technical) Dilimson Holdings Limited (Surrogate of PROGIS Austria GmBH) 2015 to 2017
My role was to promote the use of geographic information technologies in animal identification and control of rustling in Nigeria.

We are a client-focused start-up in agriculture, livestock, poultry, and veterinary and human nutrition delivery industries.
Current Project: Consultancy for the Design of a Comprehensive Agricultural Program for Livelihood Recovery and Support by Victims Support Fund in the North East of Nigeria in 2018.
Highest Educational Qualification: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), University of Maiduguri, 1987. I have several in-service and personal trainings in management in Nigeria and London.
