This course will benefit any who is engaged in the business of production including poultry farm owners, poultry farm managers, poultry farm production managers and poultry attendants. Poultry service providers and vendors can also build their capacity in delivering quality services and products to poultry farmers by taking part in this course.

What are the objectives of this course?

Let me start by stating what the objectives of the course is not. The course is not intended to make an expert in poultry diagnosis and treatment. Poultry disease and treatment are not one of the benefits, although poultry disease prevention and control will be discussed as a management function. So, the objectives of the course are to raise the level of awareness of poultry health management among poultry farmers and operators. And the role of poultry health management in enhancing productivity and profit.

What are the course outcomes?

The student should be able to describe poultry health management and its components. Be able to demonstrate his understanding of poultry health management quadrants and how to incorporate them into his poultry production practices.

What is poultry health?

Let us draw inspiration from the World Health Organization (WHO) of human health. WHO defines health as a state of physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social well being. The state of health of an individual determines the level at which an individual could perform in life.

Likewise poultry health is state of physical, emotional, and social well being of a poultry bird. For example, chicken. These factors determine the performance of poultry and profitability of the poultry production enterprise in the long run. Therefore the goal of poultry health management is to make sure that the poultry is in optimum state of physical, mental and social well being throughout its short life cycle.

Why is poultry health management important?

Poultry health management is important for so many among which poultry performance. Poultry performance is measured by weight gain, egg production and feed conversion ratio. A healthy poultry will grow and gain weight fast. A healthy poultry will lay a higher number of egg. Thereby making the venture to be profitable. It will reduce the risk disease outbreaks and mortality, resulting in savings on veterinary drugs and loss of poultry.
